Chrononauts is basically about two friends who goof around while they are traveling back and forth in time. It is a super simple notion that makes for entertaining reading.
Sean G. Murphy his artwork takes a little bit of getting used to. This is not saying that it is anything short of spectacular. You just have to stare at it for a bit to fully appreciate all the intricate details and the superb inking techniques. The characters are drawn very loose, while all the mechanics, like cars and weaponry are so tight that they look like technical drawings. The contrast is beautiful. The artwork in this book is super dynamic, this goes well with the quick pace of the story.
Millar gives us an enjoyable, albeit not very deep narrative about two friends. While they are both brilliantly smart, one of them has a troubled past. Their loyalty to each other goes above all else, so when one of them gets lost in space and time, the other jumps right after him without hesitation. What follows is a fast paced adventure, that sometimes comes dangerously close to being juvenile, but luckily bounces back to being funny.
The only negative comment I have about this book, is that the ending feels somewhat shoehorned. I understand that this is just the first book, but the ending still came all of a sudden, and didn’t completely satisfy.
In closing; I greatly recommend this book. It has amazing artwork and a fast paced and entertaining story. Even though the ending is somewhat of an anticlimax, this is still a nice new franchise to keep your eye on. There’s just something appealing about an muscle car with arrows sticking out of it.
